Bird watching

Bird watching on the Azores is still an activity that is not wide spread yet. There are not enough specialized guides and there is only some documentation available

Buteo-Buteos

We can refer to two distinct groups: sedimentary and migratory birds, the latter predominantly sea birds.

Most islands, except Flores and Corvo, are home to the buzzards, the emblematic bird of the Azores (buteo buteo rothschildi).

On San Miguel the Priolo (pyrrhula murina), a globally dwindling species, marks its presence. Fortunately, today we can witness the conscientious work done to restore the natural habitat, which enables the species survival.

As for the sea birds, the Azorean archipelago is of great value as a hatching territory, because of its unique geographic location. The Cagarro (calonectris diomedia borealis) and the Garajau (sterna hirundo) are both worth mentioning, for their nimble and gracious flight and stunning fishing techniques.
